FANCINE PRESENTS THE POSTER FOR ITS 28TH EDITION WITH ASIA AS BACKBONE

The Fantastic Film Festival of the University of Málaga will be held this year from November 14th to November 22nd at the usual venues of the contest.

‘Asia in the veins.’ This was the motto with which the Fantastic Film Festival of the University of Málaga has released the poster announcing its 28th edition, which will have Asia as the backbone of the programming and its corporate image. In this way, Fancine begins to advance the details of the next celebration of the event, which will take place from November 14th to November 22nd in its usual venues.

This special homage that the festival pays to everything linked with the oriental thing, and fundamentally to its cinematography, uses of the concept of Asia as source of inspiration, both for the quality of its industry, which includes some of the most relevant names of the international panorama of all time, as for the quantity, while it is one of the most consolidated and remarkable production focuses of the fantastic and terror genre. Sample of this is the important weight that has come having the Asian cinema in Fancine’s programming, that every year includes in its different sections a good selection of the best titles coming from that continent. The bet by this cinema has been reinforced in the last two editions, in addition, with the launching of a cycle in collaboration with CineAsia, which has turned into one of the fixed sections of the cinematographic appointment organized by the UMA.

The poster is the work of the lecturer of the Faculty of Fine Arts and graphical designer Agustín Linares, who has coordinated again his team in the creative process and has provided the original idea of it. After several editions, the image recovers the Maneki-neko, sign of Fancine’s identity, as main protagonist in the composition. In search of a common artistic reference and an attractive aesthetic, Linares has opted for the style of the communist propaganda to develop his work. ‘The challenge that I have posed for the design of the image is to integrate different Asian iconographies, but trying not to fall into the usual topics, the beauty of this aesthetic lies in the simplification of forms provoked by the silkscreen or lithographic technique of this discipline’, points out the author of the work, with influences besides the characteristic stamp of the urban artist Obey.

As for the elements that it includes, the poster incorporates some recognizable symbols on behalf of the Asian iconography, as Russian-style typography and a clear allusion to China across Mao’s posters. In an ironic way, and flaunting the transgressive and alternative character of Fancine, the cat Bad Luck appears erected as a figure of authority after the reddish gleams of the imperial Sun, holding this time a book instead of the classic knife that wields in the original logo of the festival and accompanied by an army of faithful followers.
